Day in Union Hotel
Great location, right in the Mission District and only 1 minute walking distance from the 16th St & Mission "BART" metro station. There's a constant, informal 'flea market' outside the station and many rough-looking street people hang around. But they are in a sad situation and don't bother you. The US has no functioning social system and rent prices are insanely high! The negative reviews I saw here have nothing to do with the hotel, the environment is a mirror of a broken system, maybe better to see the reality as it is. The hotel itself is an old historic building and I wasn't sure of what to expect, but it turned out to be a decent and safe place. Simple rooms, clean, no noise, free Wifi. There is a shared bathroom and shower, but frankly, in 2 days, I never coincided with anyone when I went there. Very friendly staff. I wanted to stay in that area because I was visiting a friend who lives only two blocks away and it was a good experience after all! Mission St. is full of commercial shops, 16th St. has a Latino supermarket with everything you need just across the street. Once you go down further to Valencia St., you'll find bars, Mexican and fancy coffee shops and restaurants. This is the original "San Francisco de Asís", way back to when it was a Spanish mission in 1776; the oldest building in SF, "Mission Dolores" is also still right there (https://www.missiondolores.org/old-mission).

Close to train station, private room, hot shower, housekeeping very good. Hotel is older so room was ice cold-good for sleeping (I work nights) but I had 2 extra blankets of my own. Mission District has excellent Mexican food & breakfast next door at Martha’s was amazing! Other reviews mentioned “bad area”…it’s SF! There are homeless EVERYWHERE, most are harmless and I am a single female and felt safe. Street vendors and church worship held on the corner and fresh markets across the street.

My stay at the union hotel was very good for the price paid. My small room was just what I needed for a 3 night stay - double bed, sink, bedside table, mirror and chest of drawers. Private room, shared toilets and shower all extremely clean and kept to a good standard and fresh towels provided in my room during my stay without asking. Location of hotel great for the confident traveller - local shops near by and bus stop great for links to lots of places in the city.

Abigail

Modest but sufficient accommodation for those who wish just overnight stay. Friendly and helpful staff. The location was quite ok. Metro station, buses, and public bike station are just around the corner, and a couple of shops and restaurants are nearby (I recommend the one to the left when leaving the hotel), Even if the hotel claims they do not provide parking there is a paid one on the back of the hotel (30 USD per 24hrs)

Robert

For the cheap rate, I was not sure what to expect, and I was glad to see it was definitely not a sketchy place. The hotel was well-maintained, clean, and safe. A bathroom was always available, and I only had to wait a short time for the shower. The staff appeared to be a family business and were great. If you have questions about the city, feel free to ask.
